At Sandville Self Help Foundation, we recognise the transformative role that movement and exercise play in enhancing the quality of lives of individuals living with life limiting and life changing conditions. Grounded in evidence-based practice and supported by recent guidance from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), our therapeutic exercise programmes aim to support physical, emotional, and psychological wellbeing across stages of diagnosis, rehabilitation and disease progression.
Why Exercise Matters
Research consistently shows that appropriately tailored physical activity can lead to meaningful improvements in:
- Physical and emotional wellbeing
- Muscle strength, balance and falls prevention
- Mobility and independence
- Adherence to treatment and rehabilitation
- Fatigue management and energy levels
- Quality of life and life expectancy
According to NICE, adults with long-term conditions should be encouraged to remain as physically active as their abilities and condition allow. Structured exercise can reduce symptoms, prevent further deterioration, and support mental health and social connection—all of which are essential to holistic care.

A Range of Accessible Programmes
At Sandville Self Help Foundation, we offer a variety of exercise-based interventions, all designed to meet the unique needs and abilities of our clients:
- Seated and Standing Mobility Classes and Circuits
These sessions are tailored to help clients maintain or regain independence even if limited in daily activities. Exercises are designed to strengthen core and limb muscles, improve coordination, and support fall prevention, enabling greater confidence in everyday movement. - Tai Chi
This gentle martial art focuses on slow, flowing movements and controlled breathing. Tai Chi has been associated with improvements in balance, flexibility, stress reduction, and mental focus, making it especially beneficial for neurological conditions including Parkinson’s and stroke recovery. - Yoga
Adapted for a range of abilities, our yoga classes incorporate breathwork, mindfulness, and gentle stretching to improve flexibility, reduce anxiety, and promote relaxation. Yoga is particularly helpful in managing pain, fatigue, and emotional stress. - Pilates
Our Pilates sessions focus on strengthening the core, improving posture, and enhancing muscular control. This is especially valuable for clients with musculoskeletal conditions and those recovering from injury or illness who require gentle but targeted strengthening.
Improving Daily Life, One Step at a Time
Our programmes aim not only to improve physical function, but to sustain activities of daily living and reduce dependence on care. With a focus on falls prevention, energy conservation, and psychological resilience, each session is guided by trained Health & Wellbeing Instructors and supported by our compassionate volunteer team.
Exercise at Sandville Self Help Foundation is not just about movement, it’s about restoring confidence, encouraging connection, and improving lives.
