Julia Watkins – Facilities and Volunteer Manager
I graduated from the University of Wales in 1986 with a BSc (Hons) in Applied Life Sciences. After graduating I took a position in Microbiology within the NHS and later in the pharmaceutical industry. In 1999 I attended Cardiff University and completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCEd) which led me to a role as a primary school teacher, one which I enjoyed over 22 years, thriving on the variety and daily challenges of the classroom.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, I began volunteering at the local food bank also delivering hot meals to vulnerable adults. The experience and connections I made during that time had a lasting impact, and I continued volunteering during school holidays after returning to teaching.
After taking early retirement in 2022, I started volunteering at Sandville Self Help Foundation and was inspired by the charity’s incredible work. I was thrilled to be appointed as the Facilities and Volunteer Manager in January 2023.
In my role, I oversee the daily operations of the charity’s facilities and manage the upkeep of the buildings. I also manage the volunteer team, organising rotas and ensuring they are appropriately trained and supported in their invaluable roles across the charity. I find my work deeply fulfilling and feel privileged to support individuals living with life limiting and life changing conditions.
