Sandra Owen BEM - Director
With more than 40 years of experience in nursing, community health, palliative care, cancer care, and end-of-life support, I am a committed and compassionate healthcare professional. My journey began at St Bartholomew’s Hospital, London, where I qualified as a Registered General Nurse (1984–1987). I went on to complete a Diploma in Community Health Studies (Dip CHS 1991), a Bachelor of Science in Cancer Care at the University of Glamorgan (BSc 2011), and a Postgraduate Certificate in Education at the University of South Wales (PGCEd 2013), reflecting my lifelong commitment to professional development.
From 1994 to 2022, I served as a Macmillan Palliative Care Nurse Specialist, providing person-centred, compassionate care to individuals and families facing life limiting illness. I also developed and ran an Education service within the Health Board.
Since 2022, I have been serving as a Director in Sandville Self Help Foundation, leading the charity by setting its strategic direction, overseeing operations, and ensuring its goals are achieved. I represent the charity externally, support fundraising efforts, and work closely with the board of trustees to ensure services are impactful and compliant.
With the support of my husband and son, Huw and the community, we proudly ran the Emyr Owen Branch of LATCH (2008–2024), raising over £500,000 and significantly increasing awareness of LATCH, the Welsh children’s cancer charity. This work remains one of the most meaningful aspects of my life, honouring our son Emyr’s memory through hope and support for other families.
In recognition of my contributions to charity, I was awarded the British Empire Medal (BEM) in the 2025 King’s Birthday Honours List.
My passion lies in building a service grounded in dignity, comfort, empowerment and compassion — both at Sandville Self Help Foundation and in the community — always with the goal that myself and team of staff and volunteers make a lasting difference to individuals with life limiting and life changing conditions and their families. At the core of our mission is the belief that no one should face their challenges alone.
